The WordPress platform’s user-friendly interface simplifies creating a fully-featured and functional website. However, building a site exactly the way you want still takes time. Just because you’re working out each and every detail before revealing your amazing WordPress site to the world, it doesn’t mean that have to sit on a blank domain.
This is a prime example of when you would use a well-designed under construction page, allowing you the ability to attract visitors prior to having a completed website.
The same applies when you are performing routine maintenance on a live site. No site owner wants error codes thrown at their visitors, so why not show them a professionally designed landing page that informs them that you’re merely working on making your site better? You can even redirect them to your social media pages or create a temporary contact field so they can reach you.
Yes, that all sounds so nice, but creating an under construction page from scratch also takes time.
Well, the truth is, with the right plugin you can create a visually stunning under construction or maintenance mode page in just a few clicks.
If you’re looking for such a solution, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll introduce you to Under Construction Page, a free WordPress plugin that creates professionally designed under construction, maintenance mode, and coming soon pages for you. Before we get started, here’s a quick teaser video from the creators:
Whether you’re gearing up to launch a new website, undergoing routine maintenance, or making some quick edits to your site, the Under Construction Page plugin is the perfect solution.
Getting Started with the Under Construction Page Plugin
Under Construction Page is a free plugin and available to download from the WordPress Plugin directory. To begin the install process, simply navigate to Plugins -> Add New for the left-side navigation menu of your admin screen. Type in “Under Construction” in the search field and the Under Construction Page plugin by Webfactory will appear at the top of the search results page.
Click the Install Now button, then Activate. Congratulations, you’ve successfully installed the Under Construction Page plugin.
Alternatively, the other option is to bypass the Plugin Directory and manually upload the plugin after downloading it here.
Enabling Under Construction Mode
The first thing you may notice after installing the plugin is the new notification displayed in the top toolbar of your admin screen.
Under Construction Page will show you the status of your under construction page, that is, either enabled or disabled. With this notification, you’ll always know if the site is in “under construction mode” without having to open the plugin’s setting screen. Additionally, you can quickly change the status of your site with a single click.
Enabling the under construction mode is incredibly simple and configuring the settings to your liking can be completed in seconds. Begin by going to Settings from left site navigation menu and clicking Under Construction. Upon launching the plugin, you’ll be taken to the Main tab. Here you can:
- Instantly change the status by enabling or disabling your under construction page
- Specify Removal Date
- Enter Google Analytics tracking code
Specify Removal Date
This is a great feature and allows you the ability to specify a date to automatically stop showing the under construction page. For example, if you know the precise date of launching your website, you can set a coming soon page to automatically be taken down on that day.
Google Analytics Tracking
If you have Google Analytics installed on your WordPress site and want to track the number of clicks to your landing page, simply input your Google Analytics tracking ID and the plugin works out the rest. After saving your changes, Google Analytics will display the specific number of visits to your under construction page.
The plugin features customizable options on the Design and Content tabs so you can control the appearance and functionality of your coming soon, under construction, or maintenance page. All customizable option only take a couple minutes to set up.
On the Design tab, you can pick from a plethora of highly attractive, pre-configured page themes. These pages are fully responsive, so they will look great on all browsers, whether accessed on desktop, tablet, or mobile device.
If you are comfortable with CSS, the plugin features a Custom CSS area where you get to write your own code. This allows for greater flexibility with regard to customizing specific details about the page. Essentially, with this option, you can practically create whatever want. Other than your knowledge of CSS, the only limit is your imagination.
Furthermore, on the Content tab, you can customize the title, description, headline, content, and add your social media profile information (if applicable). After customizing these options and clicking the Save Changes button, you will instantly have a stunning under construction page that can be enabled or disabled anytime!
Access Tab – Whitelisting User Roles/Users
The access tab includes a handy feature that provides you with the ability to whitelist user roles and/or specific users.
For example, you can select the specific user roles or users that won’t be affected by the plugin. After all, it wouldn’t be much fun to work on a site that can’t be seen. Simply put, instead of showing the under construction page to your admins or other designated user roles, you can whitelist specific user role with a single click. You can also do this for a particular user simply by entering their username in the Whitelisted Users field.
Ultimately, you never know when you might need to temporarily take down your site, which requires a pre-configured under construction or a maintenance page. Don’t let your visitors see the problems in action while you’re trying to whip up a temporary landing page. Install Under Construction Page (remember, it’s free), spend a couple minutes configuring and customizing it, and be prepared for when that time comes. With the click of a button, you can enable an awesome under construction page and turn your site into a gorgeous landing page that you and your visitors will love.
